STARmeter Top 10 of 2012

Here's our list of the top 10 stars of 2012. These STARmeter rankings were not based upon critical assessments or box-office performance but by the actual page views of the more than 160 million monthly unique users of IMDb.com and IMDb's leading mobile apps. We have the Top 100 STARmeter rankings for 2012, and you can also check out the Top 10 User-Rated Movies of 2012 and Top 10 User-Rated TV Shows of 2012.

1: Tom Hardy
Already an IMDb favorite thanks to his star-making turns in Inception andWarrior, the British actor went from superstar to megastar thanks to his villainous turn as the ruthless Bane in The Dark Knight Rises-- nevermind that a mask hid his handsomeness from millions of moviegoers! Up next are two coveted roles - the title role in the rebootMad Max: Fury Road and the lead in the soon-to-come big-screen adaptation of video game hit Splinter Cell. ”

2: Jennifer Lawrence

The young Academy Award-nominated star of Winter's Bone snagged the most coveted female role this side of Bella Swan with her turn as Katniss Everdeen in the adaptation of The Hunger Games which, yes, was a bulls-eye with moviegoers. Not only that, Lawrence looks to pick up her second Oscar nomination with her fetching performance in David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook. ”

3: Chris Hemsworth

The highest-ranking Avenger on our STARmeter list, the Aussie import brought muscle, gravitas, and deadpan humor to Joss Whedon's star-laden superhero flick, which just happened to be the biggest box office hit of the year. Add Snow White and the Huntsman along with The Cabin in the Woods and Red Dawn, and you have a year that was most definitely Hemsworth-friendly. ”

4: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Independent film's It Boy took to blockbuster status like a duck to water (or maybe like a "Robin" to flying) with his supporting turn in The Dark Knight Rises, and held his own against Bruce Willis in the time-bending, critically-embraced thriller Looper. He finished off the year as Abraham Lincoln's son Robert in Steven Spielberg's presidential biopic. ”

5: Christian Bale

Following his Oscar win for The Fighter, Bale strapped on the outfit for the Caped Crusader for the final time in Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, and proved himself a superhero off-screen too by spontaneously (and without a press following) visiting those injured in the tragic Aurora, CO theater shooting. ”

6: Channing Tatum

The Sexiest Man Alive was a one-man box-office bonanza this year, starting off with the romantic drama The Vow (opposite Rachel McAdams, then moving on to the surprise hit comedy 21 Jump Street (opposite Jonah Hill), and, er, climaxing with the male stripper extravaganza Magic Mike (opposite even more sexiest men alive). How big is he? Even the sequel GI Joe: Retaliation was delayed a year in order to get more Tatum-ized. ”

7: Johnny Depp

The former King of STARmeter kept a lower profile than usual this year, although he did re-team with his longtime director Tim Burton for the big-screen adaptation of Dark Shadows, which if not entirely winning proved that Depp still had his funnybone intact. Up next: the role of Tonto in the will-it-work? new version of The Lone Ranger. ”

8: Emma Stone

What do you do after getting a Golden Globe nomination, starring in an Academy Award-winning movie, and wooing Ryan Gosling onscreen? Why, you dye your hair back to its natural blonde and sashay into the role of Gwen Stacy in the reboot of The Amazing Spider-Man -- and you get your leading guy (Andrew Garfield) offscreen as well! Well-played, Ms. Stone... well-played indeed. ”

9: Josh Hutcherson

A teen no longer, the young actor earned his leading man stripes this year with the much-coveted role of Peeta Mellark in the blockbuster franchise The Hunger Games, which promised to keep him busy for the next few years, as did his other successful franchise, the continuing Journey to the... films (this year it was to a mysterious island). ”

10: Kristen Stewart

The Twilight star made a vampire-free splash early in the year with a winning turn in Snow White and the Hunstman, but was soon splashed across the tabloids when word of her affair with the director of the film was leaked. She soon reunited with off-screen love Robert Pattinson, and the two were again inseparable once Breaking Dawn - Part 2 hit theaters. ”
